Notes on chocolate: pistachio bars on a family holiday in Italy
Sun, 12 May 2024 08:00:51 GMT

The treats bring a little solace to a sad occasion

I am in Avellino, southern Italy. We have taken my mum home to her final resting place and the trip has been sad, but healing. Plugging into my enormous Italian family never fails to make me feel part of something deep and sustaining. I have bought chocolate for them (largely, Waitrose No 1 bars), a poor substitute for the lavish hospitality I am shown every minute of every day.

I grew up here part-time as a child and every corner has a story: the steps where I used to play, pretending I was from New York (because London didn’t sound glamorous enough). My grandmother’s old house that we left when I was five, and that summer when I lived, aged three, in my stripy towelling bikini. The street I was chased down by pubescent boys on their motorini when I was just 16. Back then viewing it as thrilling, now slightly differently. But there are no children, young or old playing on the streets any more. Is it the weather, I ask? No, the neighbour’s son says, no one plays out on the street any more.

Sun, sea and delcious food: 10 wonderful agriturismos in Italy
Sun, 12 May 2024 06:00:47 GMT

From a family farm where you can help yourself to lemons and oranges in the orchard to an old shepherd’s house with views of the sea

You can’t beat an agriturismo. Rural locations, owners whose main job is farming, plus food and drink produced on site all add up to a charmingly informal stay. There is rarely a reception desk and there’ll be dogs and crowing roosters to contend with, but they offer brilliant food and a friendly welcome. And they are not all buried in the countryside; there are lots of agriturismos around Italy’s 5,000 miles of coast. Here are 10 within walking or cycling distance of the beach.

Sunday with Micah Richards: ‘Body lotion is imperative for the modern-day man’
Sun, 12 May 2024 05:30:46 GMT

The former footballer and TV pundit discusses his training schedule, smart attire, lunch at half-time and skincare regime

Wake-up time? If I’m working on the football I’ll be up at 6.30am and straight into the gym. I prefer training on an empty stomach, so I tend not to eat breakfast. I’ll have a bottle of water or a protein shake.

Sunday morning? I’ll slip into a tracksuit and jump on the train from my home in Harrogate down to London for work. Once I’ve checked into my hotel, my barber comes to sharpen me up with a trim. It’s ingrained in me to look smart on the Lord’s Day, so I’ll put on a suit, shirt and tie.

Sunday lunch? I’ll eat at half-time in the first game, usually fish or steak. The quality of food depends on the stadium. Spurs is the crème de la crème. Man City go out of their way to look after me. Anfield’s also great. The pies at Burnley are absolutely magnificent.

Sunday night? Once we’re off-air at 7.30pm, the world’s my oyster. I’ll meet up with Jamie Redknapp or Daniel Sturridge for a nice meal. I’ll have a glass of red wine, then a negroni as a nightcap. My mind’s always racing after work, so I’ll unwind with a box set.

Shower or bath? Urgh, I hate baths! Sitting in dirty water? No thanks. I’ll have a proper scrub in the shower with Laura Mercier body wash and an old-school bar of Dove soap, then apply Kiehl’s body lotion. It’s imperative for the modern-day man.

Childhood Sundays? My mum would try to get us to church, but I’d wriggle out of it and play football all day in Potternewton Park, Leeds. My parents are from St Kitts and Nevis, so we’d have a Caribbean feast: jerk chicken, rice and peas, macaroni cheese, coleslaw, maybe some oxtail and chicken patties. A huge spread for about 20 people. Madness.

If you could be anywhere next Sunday? Florence. Since playing for Fiorentina, I kid myself I’m Italian. The people, weather, food, culture – I love everything about it.

Love or hate Sundays? It’s my best day. Working on Sky’s Super Sunday feels like being in the dressing room again. And sometimes I get to spend the day with Roy Keane. What’s not to love?

Upstairs at the Grill, Chester: ‘It has an awful lot going for it’ – restaurant review
Sun, 12 May 2024 05:00:48 GMT

Chester’s Upstairs at the Grill is very well liked – but that doesn’t mean it’s faultless

Upstairs at the Grill, 70 Watergate Street, Chester CH1 2LA (01244 344883). Starters £8-£15, mains £15-£52, desserts £6-£9.50, wine from £34

Upstairs at the Grill, a smart steak restaurant in Chester, has much going for it. There are eager staff, one with a magnificent beard that ought to be promoted as a tourist attraction by Visit Cheshire. There’s a beautiful setting, good ingredients and smart ideas about what to do with them. But good intentions do not always mean good experiences. Be aware: there’s no assessment of the dessert menu in this review. It had all gone on too long by then and the fight had gone out of us. True, ours was not a straightforward booking, but nor was it the most complicated: a table of seven, with two of our number arriving about 45 minutes after the first five, when they would order separately. By email they had told us this would be fine. And, frankly, given the cost, it should have been fine. Upstairs at the Grill, which opened 20 years ago, models itself on a New York steakhouse. Steak should never be cheap. It should be a treat. It should never be disappointing.

Three corkers from Majestic’s own-label range
Sun, 12 May 2024 05:00:48 GMT

Hats off to Majestic, they are about the last bricks-and-mortar off-licence chain standing

Le Grand Retour Malbec, France 2020, £12.99, or £9.99 in a mixed case of six, Majestic With the likes of Unwins, Thresher, Wine Rack and Oddbins all either severely diminished or departed to the great off-licence in the sky, Majestic is the last of the Mohicans when it comes to nationwide bricks-and-mortar wine retail chains. And, after a turbulent 2010s, the business has enjoyed a period of what seems, from the outside, like calm since being acquired by US investment firm Fortress in 2019. Sales and store numbers (there are 203 around the UK) are healthy, and, in the past couple of months, it has been joined in the Fortress stable by two very different businesses: upmarket wine bar/retailer hybrid chain Vagabond, and the no-frills retailer Poundstretcher. It was the latter’s pile-it-high discount vibe that came to mind when I recently tasted some sweeter, more commercial offerings in the Majestic range. But there are also wines that would not be out of place in one of Vagabond’s urban outlets, such as the snappy cassis-scented red, Le Grand Retour Malbec.

Definition by Majestic Barossa Shiraz, Australia 2021, £14.99, or £12.99 in a mixed case of six, Majestic) Le Grand Retour is a reference, by Cahors winemaker Georges Vigorouroux, to the malbec grape’s return to prominence in its original, southwestern French homeland. But it was a delightfully fluent and fragrant example of malbec from the country where the variety has found global 21st-century fame that was one of the highlights of Majestic’s newly revamped ‘Definition by Majestic’ own-label range. Definition by Majestic Uco Valley Malbec 2022 (£13.99, or £11.99 in a mixed six) is made by the excellent family-run firm, Zuccardi, and comes close to fulfilling the retailer’s avowed intention with the Definition wines of ‘capturing the quintessential qualities of the world’s greatest wine styles’. Another red in the range which enjoyably matches the brief is the classic vanilla-scented Definition by Majestic Viña Majestica Rioja Reserva 2018 (£14.99 or £12.99) made by La Rioja Alta; and the succulent Barossa Shiraz made by Dean Hewitson.

Sake takes UK by storm as Japan’s national drink goes mainstream
Sun, 12 May 2024 05:00:49 GMT

No longer just drunk for courage at karaoke clubs, the ‘food-friendly’ rice spirit is becoming a first choice of connoisseurs

When sommelier Erika Haigh opened the UK’s first independent sake bar, in London’s West End in 2019, passersby would wander in and try to order milkshakes, bewildered by the unfamiliar drink advertised in the window.

“Today, that confusion has largely disappeared,” said Haigh, who has since opened Mai Sake, a shop offering tasting events and meals. “You can now go on a sake bar crawl across London, and you’ll find it featured on the beverage lists of many restaurants – including non-Japanese establishments.”

Why genocide is so hard to prove – video
Thu, 09 May 2024 11:19:24 GMT

South Africa's case against Israel over allegations of genocide before the international court of justice has raised a central question of international law: what is genocide and how do you prove it? It is one of three genocide cases being considered by the UN's world court, but since the genocide convention was approved in 1948, only three instances have been legally recognised as genocide. Josh Toussaint-Strauss looks back on these historical cases to find out why the crime is so much harder to prove than other atrocities, and what bearing this has on South Africa's case against Israel and future cases

Homegrown goodness: why we should all be eating more broad beans
Thu, 25 Apr 2024 14:00:54 GMT

Tesco is on a mission to get the nation to eat more legumes. Seasonal foodie Gem Morson and clinical nutritionist Nishtha Patel explain why they’re on board

Go back in time as far as the iron age, and you’d find our ancestors eating broad beans. For centuries, the legumes were a crucial part of the British diet, until they fell out of fashion. Recently, however, they’ve been cropping up in an increasing number of recipes from some of the country’s most exciting chefs and food influencers.

Gem Morson, AKA the Mother Cooker, is on a mission to help us eat more seasonally. “Broad beans are a fantastic ingredient,” she says. “They’re packed with protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals, plus they’re grown in Britain. And because they’re available when they’re in season, they taste so much better, too.”

The humble chickpea is having a moment – here’s why they’re here to stay

Tinned chickpeas are flying off the shelves at Tesco. Vegan influencer Christina Soteriou and child nutritionist Charlotte Stirling-Reed explain why – and share their tips for recipes and moreish snacks

“Chickpeas are flying off the shelves, so our priority is making sure they’re always available when customers want them,” says Ashley Wainaina, Tesco’s canned pulses buyer. “We’ve even changed our stocking system to make it more efficient, so we can keep up with demand.”

As the UK’s largest food retailer, Tesco is helping customers make better choices when they shop by highlighting better foods, such as snacks containing under 100 calories or foods that are high in fibre or low in sugar, through its Better Baskets campaign. Chickpeas are loaded with protein and fibre, they’re filling, a third of a tin counts as one of your five a day, and they can be cooked in a plethora of different ways. They’ve been eaten for millennia across the Middle East, India and the Mediterranean, and their popularity has soared here recently, too.

What is Blockchain: Everything You Need to Know (2022)
Mon, 18 Apr 2022 05:49:00 +0000
What is Blockchain

If you want to pay online, you need to register an account and provide credit card information. If you don't have a credit card, you can pay with bank transfer. With the rise of cryptocurrencies, these methods may become old.

Imagine a world in which you can do transactions and many other things without having to give your personal information. A world in which you don’t need to rely on banks or governments anymore. Sounds amazing, right? That’s exactly what blockchain technology allows us to do.

It’s like your computer’s hard drive. blockchain is a technology that lets you store data in digital blocks, which are connected together like links in a chain.

Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.

A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.

So, What is Blockchain?

A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.

Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.

Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.

To understand how a blockchain works, Consider these basic steps:

  • Blockchain collects information in “blocks”.
  • A block has a storage capacity, and once it's used up, it can be closed and linked to a previously served block.
  • Blocks form chains, which are called “Blockchains.”
  • More information will be added to the block with the most content until its capacity is full. The process repeats itself.
  • Each block in the chain has an exact timestamp and can't be changed.

Let’s get to know more about the blockchain.

How does blockchain work?

Blockchain records digital information and distributes it across the network without changing it. The information is distributed among many users and stored in an immutable, permanent ledger that can't be changed or destroyed. That's why blockchain is also called "Distributed Ledger Technology" or DLT.

Here’s how it works:

  • Someone or a computer will transacts
  • The transaction is transmitted throughout the network.
  • A network of computers can confirm the transaction.
  • When it is confirmed a transaction is added to a block
  • The blocks are linked together to create a history.

And that’s the beauty of it! The process may seem complicated, but it’s done in minutes with modern technology. And because technology is advancing rapidly, I expect things to move even more quickly than ever.

  • A new transaction is added to the system. It is then relayed to a network of computers located around the world. The computers then solve equations to ensure the authenticity of the transaction.
  • Once a transaction is confirmed, it is placed in a block after the confirmation. All of the blocks are chained together to create a permanent history of every transaction.

How are Blockchains used?

Even though blockchain is integral to cryptocurrency, it has other applications. For example, blockchain can be used for storing reliable data about transactions. Many people confuse blockchain with cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ethereum.

Blockchain already being adopted by some big-name companies, such as Walmart, AIG, Siemens, Pfizer, and Unilever. For example, IBM's Food Trust uses blockchain to track food's journey before reaching its final destination.

Although some of you may consider this practice excessive, food suppliers and manufacturers adhere to the policy of tracing their products because bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella have been found in packaged foods. In addition, there have been isolated cases where dangerous allergens such as peanuts have accidentally been introduced into certain products.

Tracing and identifying the sources of an outbreak is a challenging task that can take months or years. Thanks to the Blockchain, however, companies now know exactly where their food has been—so they can trace its location and prevent future outbreaks.

Blockchain technology allows systems to react much faster in the event of a hazard. It also has many other uses in the modern world.

What is Blockchain Decentralization?

Blockchain technology is safe, even if it’s public. People can access the technology using an internet connection.

Have you ever been in a situation where you had all your data stored at one place and that one secure place got compromised? Wouldn't it be great if there was a way to prevent your data from leaking out even when the security of your storage systems is compromised?

Blockchain technology provides a way of avoiding this situation by using multiple computers at different locations to store information about transactions. If one computer experiences problems with a transaction, it will not affect the other nodes.

Instead, other nodes will use the correct information to cross-reference your incorrect node. This is called “Decentralization,” meaning all the information is stored in multiple places.

Blockchain guarantees your data's authenticity—not just its accuracy, but also its irreversibility. It can also be used to store data that are difficult to register, like legal contracts, state identifications, or a company's product inventory.

Pros and Cons of Blockchain

Blockchain has many advantages and disadvantages.

Pros

  • Accuracy is increased because there is no human involvement in the verification process.
  • One of the great things about decentralization is that it makes information harder to tamper with.
  • Safe, private, and easy transactions
  • Provides a banking alternative and safe storage of personal information

Cons

  • Data storage has limits.
  • The regulations are always changing, as they differ from place to place.
  • It has a risk of being used for illicit activities

Frequently Asked Questions About Blockchain

I’ll answer the most frequently asked questions about blockchain in this section.

Is Blockchain a cryptocurrency?

Blockchain is not a cryptocurrency but a technology that makes cryptocurrencies possible. It's a digital ledger that records every transaction seamlessly.

Is it possible for Blockchain to be hacked?

Yes, blockchain can be theoretically hacked, but it is a complicated task to be achieved. A network of users constantly reviews it, which makes hacking the blockchain difficult.

What is the most prominent blockchain company?

Coinbase Global is currently the biggest blockchain company in the world. The company runs a commendable infrastructure, services, and technology for the digital currency economy.

Who owns Blockchain?

Blockchain is a decentralized technology. It’s a chain of distributed ledgers connected with nodes. Each node can be any electronic device. Thus, one owns blockhain.

What is the difference between Bitcoin and Blockchain technology?

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, which is powered by Blockchain technology while Blockchain is a distributed ledger of cryptocurrency

What is the difference between Blockchain and a Database?

Generally a database is a collection of data which can be stored and organized using a database management system. The people who have access to the database can view or edit the information stored there. The client-server network architecture is used to implement databases. whereas a blockchain is a growing list of records, called blocks, stored in a distributed system. Each block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block, timestamp and transaction information. Modification of data is not allowed due to the design of the blockchain. The technology allows decentralized control and eliminates risks of data modification by other parties.

Final Saying

Blockchain has a wide spectrum of applications and, over the next 5-10 years, we will likely see it being integrated into all sorts of industries. From finance to healthcare, blockchain could revolutionize the way we store and share data. Although there is some hesitation to adopt blockchain systems right now, that won't be the case in 2022-2023 (and even less so in 2026). Once people become more comfortable with the technology and understand how it can work for them, owners, CEOs and entrepreneurs alike will be quick to leverage blockchain technology for their own gain. Biden White House to expand tariffs on Chinese trade
Fri, 10 May 2024 12:06:52 GMT

President likely to add sectors such as electric vehicles, batteries and solar cells to range of levies set up under Donald Trump

Joe Biden is expected as early as next week to announce fresh tariffs on Chinese trade, with levies focused on strategic sectors including electric vehicles, in a review of measures first put into place under Donald Trump.

An announcement planned for Tuesday will keep the blanket tax rises introduced by the president’s predecessor but supplement them with targeted levies on industries connected to EVs, including batteries and solar cells, according to reports.

Could new US sanctions threaten future of West Bank settlements? | Emma Graham-Harrison and Quique Kierszenbaum
Sun, 12 May 2024 05:00:50 GMT

Joe Biden’s latest executive order gives scope to target the finances of Israeli politicians and businesses linked to extremists

Escalating US sanctions on violent settlers, initially taken as a mostly political rebuke to extremists, are now seen by some inside Israel as a potential threat to the financial viability of all Israeli settlements and companies in the occupied West Bank.

The Biden administration’s new controls on a handful of men and organisations linked to attacks on Palestinian civilians, first announced in February then expanded twice in March and April, have generally been treated in Israel and beyond more as a humiliating public censure of a close ally than as a major political shift.

Children ‘piled up and shot’: new details emerge of ethnic cleansing in Darfur
Thu, 09 May 2024 03:00:37 GMT

As El Fasher stands on the ‘precipice of a massacre’, rights groups call for sanctions after new testimony describes atrocities carried out by RSF paramilitaries in Sudan

Gruesome new testimony details one of the worst atrocities of the year-long Sudanese civil war – the large-scale massacre of civilians as they desperately tried to flee an ethnic rampage in Darfur last summer.

Witnesses describe children, still alive, being “piled up and shot” by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as they attempted to escape the regional capital of El Geneina in June last year during a bout of ethnic violence in which thousands of civilians were killed.

Sat, 11 May 2024 13:00:28 GMT

New York trial heard salacious details about actor’s encounter with ex-president, but it ‘doesn’t move the needle’ with his supporters

Stormy Daniels may have regarded sex with Donald Trump as brief, unimaginative and regrettable but the porn star gripped the nation with a salacious and lengthy retelling of the encounter to a New York court this week.

Daniels’s humiliating testimony in Trump’s fraud trial infuriated the former president who glowered from a few feet away. But her account only confirmed what most Americans already knew about a man widely regarded as a sexual predator and appeared unlikely to change many votes in November’s presidential election.

US campus protests give Trump a target for his violent rhetoric of vengeance
Sat, 11 May 2024 10:00:25 GMT

Tough-guy talk about ‘radical-left lunatics’ is an extreme spin on an old playbook but plays well with his Republican base

Donald Trump delights in railing against his enemies, and when protesters set up encampments at college campuses nationwide to decry Israel’s invasion of Gaza, the former US president gained another useful antagonist.

For some observers, Trump’s language is both dangerous in the current political environment as he seeks to rile up his base and a dark hint at how he might treat dissent and demonstrations should he defeat Joe Biden and achieve his ambition of returning to the White House in 2025.

‘You say you are a musician, they beat you more’: the Ukrainian sax player who survived Putin’s torture prisons
Sun, 12 May 2024 04:00:45 GMT

Yuriy Merkotan played in a military band and, after being caught up in the Mariupol siege, spent nearly two years in various jails

When Yuriy Merkotan enlisted in Ukraine’s national guard in 2020, it was not because he wanted to fight. A saxophonist living in the southern port city of Mariupol, there were few opportunities to play music professionally. So when a spot became free in a 16-person band attached to a national guard brigade, he jumped at the chance.

But when Russian forces put Mariupol under siege in February 2022, the band members were called to duty. They ended up inside Azovstal, the sprawling factory that became the last bastion of Ukrainian defence as the Russian occupation proceeded to its grim conclusion.

‘This gesture made history’: watch given to Gina Lollobrigida by Fidel Castro is to go on sale

After the actor turned photojournalist interviewed the communist leader, he gave her his watch – one of many items of her memorabilia up for auction

It was one of the most unusual interviews: she was the glamorous 1950s Italian film star, once described as the “most beautiful woman in the world”; he was the gruff communist leader of Cuba.

But Gina Lollobrigida and Fidel Castro clearly hit it off. He was so taken with his interrogator, who had become a photojournalist after her film career ended, that he took off his watch and gave it to her.

Far-right EU election gains could boost nationalist parties on home turf

Polls indicate a surge for the right across the continent in next month’s ballots but the centrists are still likely to hold sway in parliament

Far-right gains in next month’s European elections will be hard, if not impossible, to parlay into more power in parliament, experts say, but they could boost nationalist parties in EU capitals – with potentially greater consequences.

Polling suggests far-right and hardline conservative parties could finish first in nine EU states, including Austria, France and the Netherlands, in the polls between 6 and 9 June, and second or third in another nine, including Germany, Spain, Portugal and Sweden.

US and China need ‘climate armistice’ to meet net zero, says former head of CSIRO
Sat, 11 May 2024 20:00:37 GMT

‘Climate change is a global problem. It needs that global level of collaboration,’ says Larry Marshall

The world needs a “climate armistice” between the US and China if net zero emissions are to be reached while Australia should hone its efforts on a few key areas where it has an unusual competitive edge, Larry Marshall, the former CSIRO chief executive, said.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s budget in which the Albanese government’s Future Made In Australia (FMIA) plans will probably be prominent, Marshall said the nation ought to focus any industrial support on sectors such as processing of lithium or vanadium or products that realistically scale up.

Jailed Indian opposition leader granted bail to take part in election campaign
